Loved The Soundtrack, But The Movie Was…

Sgt PeppersWhen I was a kid,  I remember hearing the rhythmic brass and opulent vocal harmonies of Earth, Wind & Fire trumpeting an amazing cover of the Beatles hit ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’ on my radio,  and the announcer saying that it was from the soundtrack of the film ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’.  I visited the local record store on Main Street to see what other songs were on the soundtrack, and I was amazed to find other Beatles songs covered by the Bee-Gees, Steven Tyler, Aerosmith, Billy Preston, and Peter Frampton.  With a line up like that I just knew the film had to be great.

I mowed six extra yards that week so that I would have more than enough money for tickets to the movie for my little brother and me, as well as popcorn, Milk Duds, and a Pepsi for each of us.  Once we were seated comfortably, eight rows from the back and dead center, we waited ardently for the film to start.  Two hours later, as the credits rolled, I remember my little brother looking me square in the eyes and exclaiming, “You need to get your money back because that sucked!”.  And,  I have to admit,  he was right.

That was truly a case of loved the soundtrack, but the movie was just
horrible
, and I have to tell ya,  I’ve seen many more including: 1984’s  Charlie's Angels Full Throttle ‘Footloose’ – Denise Williams, Kenny Loggins, Sammy Hagar, Bonnie Tyler, Foreigner, John ‘Cougar’ Mellencamp.  Great soundtrack.  Movie stunk.  Or how about ‘Under the Cherry Moon’,  in 1986 featuring an entire soundtrack by Prince, with hits like ‘Kiss’ and ‘Anotherloverholenyohead’.  Great soundtrack.  Absolutely horrible film.  And there was 2003’s ‘Charlie’s Angels – Full Throttle’ that featured David Bowie, Bon Jovi, Journey, and Sir Mix-A-Lot on the soundtrack.  As for the film, well you know the score.  I could name several others, but was amazed at the list that Rolling Stone magazine compiled.  I think they may have missed a few and actually listed a few they shouldn’t have.  What do you think?
